China urges Abe government to face up to history

China's Ambassador to Japan Cheng Yonghua has urged Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to face up to history in his upcoming statement marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Cheng made the remarks at a Chinese Embassy in Japan during a symposium on China's victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

"Upon the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, the ‘Abe Statement’ is being closely watched by international society, including China, as to what message it will convey about the war of aggression waged by Japan's military. Only by facing up to its history and showing a clear attitude toward its war responsibility can Japan face up to the future and open a new chapter in history," said Cheng.
