Court Says Trial of Dasuki for Fraud Charges to Begin

Nigerian court rejected an appeal by former national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki, to have fraud charges against him thrown out after state agents failed to release him on bail.

Dasuki, who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan, will face trial on charges of fraud and money laundering filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, the court ruled in Abuja on Monday. His lawyer had asked presiding Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf to dismiss the charges after Dasuki was rearrested in December in disregard of the bail granted him.

The judge refused, saying the EFCC is different from the state security police that is detaining Dasuki. Trial will start on March 23, he said.

“We’re going to reflect on the ruling and either appeal or file an application against” the state security police, Dasuki’s lawyer, Ahmed Raji, told reporters after the court session.
